Abstract

A significant part of learning a second language takes part in classroom, which brings into discussion as second language students face various problems and challenges which interfere in their second language learning. Teachers and educators have used different teaching approaches and strategies to help these struggling students, untying the knot of language theories from the experts. However, there are still circumstances in which students could not master the language due to various challenges and difficulties in learning the second language. One of it is to acquire the linguistic items in the English language namely grammar and the four basic skills. Hence, this study determines the challenges faced by upper-secondary Malaysian students as well as the solutions employed by them to assist them in learning English as a second language (L2). The findings suggest that students faced challenges in terms of understanding the language and learning materials, the L1 interference and the motivation to learn. There are also solutions employed to facilitate L2 learning such as collaborative and autonomous learning styles and language practices. Based on the findings, some recommendations are presented for future research.
