FACTORS AFFECTING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AMONGST INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS UTILIZING ENGLISH LANGUAGE AS THE MAJOR MEDIUM OF THEIR INTERACTIONS

Abstract

Interpersonal communication is an essential element of university life of students who stay at international universities. Identifying factors affecting their regular contacts could help them to conduct fruitful interactions with one another. Thus, this study was carried out to appraise factors influencing interpersonal communications amongst foreigner and local students of a Malaysian university. The embedded structure of assorted techniques was applied to carry out the existing study. The quantitative scheme, as the major method of this study had 210 contributors from foreigner and local students of the mentioned university, and according totheir personal agreements, 12 of them were interviewed to strengthen the survey data. Based on the results from this study, the contributors were using English langue as the major medium of their regular communications with students of divergent nationalities and the levels of their proficiency in English language and their regular interpersonal contacts had reciprocated effects on each one. According to the results from the current study, about 70% of the contributors pointed out that they had practised various interactions with peers from dissimilar nationalities, and their regular contacts helped them to advance the levels of their proficiency in English language and to achieve some new social and cultural information in relation to dissimilar people. The results from this study could help students from dissimilar nationalities to have more effective communications with their peers from various demographic settings.
